چکیده
Have you ever hiked up a mountain and felt frosty wind blowing across your face? You might need to button jacket visit this place, but here, whitebark pine trees are right at home. Whitebark pines thrive in the highest forests of western North America. In these environments, help other, less-hardy species establish, grow, survive. For pine, chilly mountaintops provide refuge from insects, disease, competition with other trees. Yet as our climate changes, no longer have cold on their side. They dying alarming rates, one biggest killers is tiny bark beetle. How change helping little insect munch through huge swaths forest? National Park Service scientists use long-term monitoring studies unravel complicated relationship. This information guides resource managers entrusted protecting pines.

Climate influences on whitebark pine mortality from mountain pine beetle in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Extensive mortality of whitebark pine, beginning in the early to mid-2000s, occurred in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) of the western USA, primarily from mountain pine beetle but also from other threats such as white pine blister rust. The climatic drivers of this recent mortality and the potential for future whitebark pine mortality from mountain pine beetle are not well understood, y...
متن کاملNitrogen Cycling Responses to Mountain Pine Beetle Disturbance in a High Elevation Whitebark Pine Ecosystem
Ecological disturbances can significantly affect biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial ecosystems, but the biogeochemical consequences of the extensive mountain pine beetle outbreak in high elevation whitebark pine (WbP) (Pinus albicaulis) ecosystems of western North America have not been previously investigated. Mountain pine beetle attack has driven widespread WbP mortality, which could drive ...
متن کاملHedonic Valuation with Translating Amenities: Mountain Pine Beetles and Host Trees in the Colorado Front Range
In hedonic valuation studies the policy-relevant environmental quality attribute of interest is often costly to measure, especially under pronounced spatial and temporal variability. However, in many cases this attribute affects home prices and consumer preferences solely through its impact on a readily observable, spatially delineated, and time-invariant feature of the physical landscape. We l...
متن کاملRapid identification and detection of pine pathogenic fungi associated with mountain pine beetles by padlock probes.
Fifteen million hectares of pine forests in western Canada have been attacked by the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae; MPB), leading to devastating economic losses. Grosmannia clavigera and Leptographium longiclavatum, are two fungi intimately associated with the beetles, and are crucial components of the epidemic. To detect and discriminate these two closely related pathogens, we ...
متن کاملTree response and mountain pine beetle attack preference, reproduction and emergence timing in mixed whitebark and lodgepole pine stands
1 Mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) is an important disturbance agent in Pinus ecosystems of western North America, historically causing significant tree mortality. Most recorded outbreaks have occurred in mid elevation lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta). In warm years, tree mortality also occurs at higher elevations in mixed species stands. 2 Mountain pine beetle’s relative preferenc...
